Where to Eat in Downtown Charleston: My Favorite Restaurants
Charleston, South Carolina, is a true foodie destination, and one of my favorite things about spending time here is discovering all the wonderful places to eat!
From classic Southern seafood restaurants and charming historic courtyards to beautiful dining rooms and memorable date-night spots, downtown Charleston has something for just about everyone.
I’ve had the chance to experience many of Charleston’s restaurants firsthand, and these are some of the places I’d recommend to friends planning a visit.
Whether you’re visiting Charleston for the first time, planning a romantic weekend, or just looking for somewhere delicious to eat, here’s where I’d start!
Hyman’s Seafood – A Classic Charleston Tradition

If you’re looking for a truly traditional Charleston dining experience, Hyman’s Seafood is about as classic as it gets!
This longtime Charleston institution is filled with history, personality, and plenty of Southern charm. And while the seafood is certainly a draw, I have to mention the hush puppies. They are absolutely amazing and one of my favorite things about eating here!
What makes Hyman’s especially memorable is the atmosphere. The owners often walk around the restaurant chatting with guests, which gives the place such a welcoming, personal feel.
And here’s something fun: Each table identifies a famous person who has previously sat there! The walls are also covered with photographs of celebrities and other well-known visitors. It’s almost like getting a little Charleston history and celebrity tour while enjoying your meal.
My personal tip: Hyman’s does not take reservations, so be prepared for a possible wait, especially during busy dining hours. I’d recommend going a little earlier or later than the typical lunch or dinner rush.
For a first-time Charleston visitor, Hyman’s is one of those iconic restaurants that’s worth experiencing at least once!

- Classic Seafood and Southern Favorites
- No Reservations – Walk-ins only

Church and Union – Dinner in a Historic Charleston Church

If you’re looking for a restaurant with a truly unique atmosphere, Church and Union should definitely be on your Charleston list!
Located inside a beautifully converted historic church, this restaurant is one of the most interesting dining spaces I’ve experienced in downtown Charleston.
But what really makes it special is the ceiling! The words of Sun Tzu’s The Art of War are displayed across the dramatic vaulted ceiling, creating an incredible visual feature that’s unlike anything you’d expect to find in a restaurant.
I love places that offer more than just a meal, and Church and Union certainly delivers when it comes to atmosphere. Between the historic architecture and that unforgettable ceiling, it’s a dining experience you’ll remember long after you’ve left Charleston.
My personal tip: Take a moment to look up and appreciate the ceiling! It’s the signature feature of the restaurant, and I’d definitely recommend taking a photo.
If you’re visiting Charleston and want a memorable restaurant setting, Church and Union is a wonderful choice.
- 32B North Market Street
- Modern American cuisine
- Don’t miss the dramatic ceiling

82 Queen – Beautiful Courtyards & Southern Charm

If you’re looking for a restaurant that captures Charleston’s historic charm, 82 Queen is definitely one to add to your list!
What I loved most about this restaurant was its unique layout. Rather than one traditional dining room, 82 Queen is spread across a collection of historic buildings, with beautiful courtyards tucked between them. It almost feels like discovering a little hidden village right in the heart of downtown Charleston!
The setting is wonderfully eclectic, with different dining spaces that each have their own personality. It’s the kind of restaurant where exploring the surroundings is part of the experience.
And the food and drinks? Both were fantastic! I love finding restaurants where the atmosphere is just as memorable as the meal, and 82 Queen certainly delivered.
My personal tip: If the weather is nice, ask about courtyard seating when making your reservation. Dining outdoors among those charming Charleston buildings is a wonderful way to experience the restaurant.
Whether you’re planning a romantic dinner, a leisurely lunch, or simply want to enjoy a beautiful Charleston setting, 82 Queen is a fantastic choice!

Poogan’s Porch – Southern Charm with a Haunted History

Charleston is full of historic buildings and ghost stories, and Poogan’s Porch combines both!
I first learned about this charming restaurant while taking a Charleston ghost tour, and its stories have stuck with me ever since.
Located inside a historic Victorian home, Poogan’s Porch is known not only for its Southern cuisine but also for its haunted history. According to local ghost stories, a woman is said to haunt the building, with reported sightings in the dining areas and even the bathroom!
But my favorite part of the story is how the restaurant got its name.
Poogan was a neighborhood dog who loved spending time on the porch and became a beloved part of the restaurant’s history. After he passed away, he was buried on the property, and local legends suggest his spirit may still make an occasional appearance!
Whether you believe in ghosts or simply enjoy a good story, Poogan’s Porch has the kind of character that makes Charleston so much fun to explore.
My personal tip: Look for Poogan’s memorial outside the restaurant, and ask about the ghost stories! It’s a fun stop for anyone who enjoys Charleston’s haunted history.

- Historic home with local ghost legends

Magnolias – Classic Southern Dining in Historic Charleston

If you’re looking for a traditional Charleston dining experience, Magnolias is a wonderful choice!
Located on historic East Bay Street, Magnolias has been a longtime fixture in Charleston’s dining scene. The restaurant has that classic, old-school Southern feel that fits perfectly with the city’s historic charm.
What I appreciate about Magnolias is that it doesn’t try to be trendy or overly modern. It’s all about traditional Southern cuisine, a welcoming atmosphere, and the kind of dining experience that feels distinctly Charleston.
The historic building and classic setting add to the experience, making it a lovely place to slow down and enjoy a meal while exploring downtown.
My personal tip: Magnolias is a great option when you want a more traditional sit-down Charleston meal rather than a trendy restaurant or casual seafood spot. I’d recommend making a reservation, especially for dinner.
If you’re visiting Charleston for the first time and want to experience classic Lowcountry dining, Magnolias deserves a spot on your list!

- Traditional Southern and Lowcountry cuisine
- Reservations recommended

Frannie & The Fox – A Hidden Courtyard Gem in Downtown Charleston

One of my favorite little hidden gems in downtown Charleston is Frannie & The Fox!
Tucked inside the beautiful Hotel Emeline, this restaurant has one of the best secret courtyards I’ve discovered in the city. It’s the kind of place you might not even realize exists unless someone tells you about it!
The courtyard is absolutely charming and makes for such a wonderful spot to enjoy a relaxing meal or cocktails away from the busy downtown streets.
And the food? The pizza was fantastic! Add in some amazing drinks, and you’ve got the perfect combination of great food, atmosphere, and Charleston charm.
I especially love finding places that feel a little unexpected, and Frannie & The Fox is exactly that. It’s a wonderful alternative to some of Charleston’s more traditional Southern restaurants.
My personal tip: Try to get a table in the courtyard if the weather cooperates. It’s really what makes this restaurant special, and I’d absolutely recommend ordering a pizza and enjoying a cocktail while you’re there!
If you’re looking for a fun date-night spot or a relaxed meal in a beautiful setting, Frannie & The Fox is definitely worth adding to your Charleston list.

FIG – A Food Lover’s Destination Worth Planning Ahead For

If you’re a serious foodie visiting Charleston, FIG is one restaurant you’ll want to plan ahead for!
FIG stands for “Food Is Good,” and that simple name says a lot about the restaurant’s philosophy. Rather than relying on a traditional menu that stays the same year-round, FIG focuses on fresh, seasonal ingredients, with a menu that evolves based on what’s available.
One of the things that makes this restaurant so special is that the menu can change daily. It’s all about showcasing ingredients at their best, which means your dining experience may be different from someone who visited just a few days earlier.
But here’s something you absolutely need to know: FIG is extremely difficult to get into! This is not a restaurant I’d recommend leaving to chance or trying to walk into at the last minute.
My personal tip: Make your reservation as soon as your Charleston travel dates are confirmed. I’d plan weeks ahead and check the restaurant’s reservation release schedule so you don’t miss your opportunity.
If you’re looking for a memorable, food-focused dinner in Charleston, FIG is definitely one to put on your list!
- 232 Meeting Street
- Season, ingredient driven cuisine
- Book well in advance
