A Great Old Fashioned Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
There’s something about a perfectly made Old Fashioned that I absolutely love. The combination of good bourbon, a little sweetness, aromatic bitters, and fresh orange makes it one of my favorite cocktails.
And the best part? You don’t need an elaborate home bar to make one.
I’m sharing my go-to Old Fashioned recipe, along with the tools and accessories that make preparing and serving this classic cocktail even better. Whether you’re just getting into bourbon or building your own home bar, these are the essentials I’d start with.
My Classic Bourbon Old Fashioned Recipe

Ingredients:
– 2 oz bourbon
– ¼ oz regular simple syrup
– 2–3 dashes Angostura bitters
– Maraschino Cherries
– 1 large ice cube
– Fresh orange peel
Instructions:
1. Add bourbon, simple syrup, and bitters to a mixing glass with ice.
2. Stir for about 20–30 seconds until chilled.
3. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.
4. Add cherries and twist an orange peel over the drink to release its oils, then garnish.
Tip: Start with ¼ oz syrup and adjust to your preferred sweetness.
