Great Bourbon Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

I’ve collected bourbon on both coasts, tried plenty of different bottles, and discovered that my favorites usually have one thing in common: rich, delicious flavor.

I’m especially drawn to bourbons with notes of caramel, vanilla, brown sugar, and toffee. But I also appreciate a bold, oakier pour and the occasional spicy rye.

This isn’t a list of the most expensive or hardest-to-find bottles. It’s a place to share bourbons I’ve personally enjoyed, what makes each one interesting, and who I think might enjoy them too.

Whether you’re just getting into bourbon or looking for something new to try, I hope this helps you discover your next favorite pour!

Sweet & Caramel Forward Bourbon Favorites

If you love flavors like caramel, vanilla, brown sugar and toffee this is a great place to start. These bourbons lean toward the sweeter side, making them especially appealing if you’re new to whiskey or prefer a smoother, dessert-like pour.

Bold & Rich Bourbon Flavors

When I want something with a little more depth, I reach for bourbons that balance rich oak, caramel, vanilla and warming spice. I enjoy bold flavors but I don’t necessarily want the highest-proof bottle on the shelf. These are bourbons that deliver plenty of character without overwhelming my palate.

Why I’d recommend it: Russell’s Reserve 10 Year delivers a lovely balance of rich bourbon flavors and approachable proof. It’s a great choice when I want something with depth that doesn’t overpower the sweeter notes I enjoy.

Best for: Someone ready to explore oakier, more developed bourbon flavors without jumping into high-proof whiskey.

E.H. Taylor Small Batch

Flavor profile: Caramel, vanilla, oak, and baking spice.

Why I’d recommend it: E.H. Taylor Small Batch brings together the classic bourbon flavors I enjoy, with enough spice and oak to keep things interesting. At 100 proof, it offers a satisfying step up in intensity without going all the way to barrel-proof territory.

Best for: Bourbon drinkers looking for a balanced, flavorful bottled-in-bond bourbon.
