Charleston Walking Tour: 6 Easy Stops for First-Time Visitors
Visiting Charleston, South Carolina, for the first time? One of the best ways to experience this beautiful Southern city is on foot!
I’ve put together an easy, self-guided walking route featuring six of Charleston’s most recognizable stops, from the colorful houses of Rainbow Row to the famous Pineapple Fountain and historic Charleston City Market.
This route is perfect for first-time visitors who want to explore at their own pace, take plenty of photos, and enjoy some of Charleston’s most charming streets along the way. Best of all, you don’t need to book a tour to follow it!
Your 6-Stop Charleston Walking Tour
This self-guided route takes you through Charleston’s historic downtown, combining beautiful architecture, waterfront scenery, shopping, and a few classic Charleston landmarks.
Plan for approximately 2-3 hours to enjoy all six stops, take photos and explore at a relaxed pace. Allow extra time if you’d like to browse Charleston City Market, tour a historic attraction or stop for refreshments along the way.
Wear comfortable shoes, bring your camera, and don’t forget about potential rain especially during Charleston’s warmer months.
Stop 1: Charleston City Market
Start your Charleston adventure at the historic Charleston City Market, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Browse the stalls filled with local artwork, handmade crafts, souvenirs, and traditional sweetgrass baskets.
It’s a wonderful place to get a feel for Charleston’s history and culture before exploring the beautiful streets nearby. Grab a coffee, take your time browsing, and get ready to discover the Holy City on foot!
Sweet Treat Stop: Byrd’s Famous Cookies!

My personal recommendation? You have to try the Original and the Key Lime Coolers!
Before leaving the Charleston City Market area, make a quick stop at Byrd’s Famous Cookies on South Market Street! This charming cookie shop is known for its bite-sized, crispy cookies, and one of the best parts is getting to sample the different flavors.
It’s a fun little stop for something sweet, and the cookies make a great souvenir to bring home from Charleston!
Stop 2: The French Quarter & Historic Streets
From Charleston City Market, wander south into the charming French Quarter, where historic churches, colorful buildings, cobblestone streets, and beautiful architecture make every corner worth exploring.
Take your time strolling along Church Street and the surrounding blocks. This is one of my favorite parts of Charleston for soaking up the city’s atmosphere, admiring the architecture, and discovering little details you might miss from a car.
Stop 3: Rainbow Row

No visit to Charleston is complete without seeing Rainbow Row! This famous stretch of colorful historic homes along East Bay Street is one of the most photographed spots in the city.
Take a few minutes to admire the pastel-colored buildings, snap some photos, and appreciate the beautiful architecture that makes Charleston so special. It’s an especially fun stop for first-time visitors and anyone who loves discovering picture-perfect streets.
Stop 4: The Battery & White Point Garden

Continue south along East Bay Street toward the Battery, one of Charleston’s most beautiful waterfront areas. Along the way, you’ll pass impressive historic mansions, charming gardens, and some of the city’s most elegant homes.
Spend a little time exploring White Point Garden, where shady oak trees, historic monuments, and harbor views create a peaceful place to take a break. This is one of my favorite areas for admiring Charleston’s grand historic homes and enjoying the waterfront scenery.
Stop 5: Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon
Finish your Charleston walking tour at the Old Exchange & Provost Dungeon, one of the city’s most fascinating historic landmarks. Built in the 1770s, this impressive building has played an important role in Charleston’s history, serving as a customs house, public gathering place, and site connected to the American Revolution.
You can admire the historic building from outside or choose to take a guided tour to explore its history and the dungeon below. It’s a wonderful final stop that adds a little extra history to your Charleston adventure!
Stop 6: Waterfront Park & the Pineapple Fountain

From the Battery, make your way north along the waterfront toward Charleston’s beautiful Waterfront Park. This relaxing park offers lovely harbor views, shaded walkways, and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the scenery.
Be sure to visit the iconic Pineapple Fountain, one of Charleston’s most recognizable landmarks. The pineapple has long been associated with Southern hospitality, making this a fitting symbol of the Holy City. It’s also a fantastic spot for photos!
Optional Cocktail Stop: The Rooftop at The Vendue

My tip: Save this stop for the end of your walk and treat yourself to a cocktail before heading off to dinner!
If you’re ready to relax after exploring Charleston on foot, I recommend heading to The Rooftop at The Vendue for a cocktail!
Located near Waterfront Park, this rooftop bar is a wonderful place to take a break, enjoy the atmosphere, and take in views of Charleston’s historic rooftops and harbor.
It’s a fun way to wrap up your walking tour, especially if you’re visiting with friends or planning a romantic Charleston getaway.
